Day 4: Inspiration

Storm Darragh has wreaked a bit of chaos up in Yorkshire with some wet and blustery days so I’ve not been able to get out as much as I’d like.

In the absence of any of my skating, here’s a collection of videos from the past 30 years or so that I’ve always loved.

Colin McKay’s spot on the Plan B Virtual Reality video summed up loads that I loved about skating in the 90s – the attitude, the mix of street and vert, the music. I had friends at the time that were about like the guys Colin skated with – I know I never really fit in with them but I liked the idea that I did.
Tom Penny was the skater when I was growing up, and the fact that he competed at Radlands (our local park in Northampton) made it even cooler.I was always impressed with how effortless and smooth his style is – almost floating through the tricks without even having to try.
Here’s a longer clip of Tom Penny at Radlands just to prove his winning run wasn’t a one-off.
Fast-forward to the early 2000’s and the Spike Jonze produced Fully Flared for Lakai became one of the best skate videos I’ve ever watched – the production, the music, the skaters – every spot is incredible.
…and then Yeah Right from Girl. Also from Spike Jonze, this one features Eric Koston, Brandon Biebel, Marc Johnson, Rick McCrank, Mike Carroll, Brian Anderson, and even Owen Wilson. And a great tribute to Keenan Milton too.
